Alfred Glenn Bowen Jr., fondly known as Pap to his adoring family, left this world on November 17, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on June 12, 1938, in Paden City, WV, his life was one filled with love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to service.

He spent a majority of his working years as a dedicated employee in Maintenance for West Virginia Northern Community College. However, it was his role as a Reserves Police Officer for the City of Wheeling for 38 years that truly defined him. For many years, he dutifully served his community, ensuring the safety and well-being of those around him.

Although Pap’s accomplishments were impressive, his greatest source of pride was his family. He cherished his three children, Lisa Bowen, Bill (Tina) Bowen, and Bob (Sue Ann) Bowen, with a love that knew no bounds. His adoration extended to his numerous grandchildren: Steven, Sean, Travis, Casey, Courtney, Trevor, Leah, Steven, Christopher, Christy, Tyler, Kendra, and Zachary. And as if that weren’t enough, he welcomed the joy of great-grandchildren into his life as well. Alexia, Ariyana, Jordyn, Colton, Sawyer, Brayden, Karlee, Rylee, and Brody held a special place in Pap’s heart, bringing immeasurable happiness to his final years. Pap will be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

His kindness, generosity, and passion for his loved ones will forever be remembered as his legacy of love. He leaves behind a beautiful family, enriched by his presence in their lives. Pap is preceded in death by his loving and loyal wife of 54 years, Sandra Bowen, as well as his parents, Alfred Glenn Bowen Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Bowen. He rejoins his sisters, Cora Bennett and Garnett Gorrell.

To honor and celebrate Pap’s remarkable life, visitation will take place on November 22nd at 1400 Eoff Street, from 10:00am until the service at 12:00pm. The service to commemorate his life will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Homes at 12:00pm. Following the service, a procession will lead from 1400 Eoff Street to Park View Cemetery, where Pap’s interment will take place.

Alfred’s departure is a time of both loss and celebration. While we mourn the physical presence of such an incredible man, we also find solace in the memories and the inspirational spirit he leaves behind. May his journey to eternal peace bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.

Thank you to everyone who commented here .Such an amazing Dad Grandfather Great Grandfather Uncle and cousin co-worker.That last one I bet There definitely would be some benefits to working with him cause he’d do most of the work But as far as working for him I’m sry No lol I could tell many stories they all have the same ending He’d take us kids to either find and stack wood or clean up something that he’d say was gonna be a couple hours either he couldn’t tell time or he flat out lied but we’d always come home 5-6 hours later exhausted and his incredible strength I always said was because he was actually born the same day as Superman June 12,1938. The same day the first Superman comic book was published Rest in peace Dad Give Mom a big hug for me and relax your battle was a tough one not many could have made it thru all that you’ve been thru
Love you

I worked with Al at the Ireland Mine in 1978-79, Later, I got to talk to him at WVNCC, he was a good man and one of the hardest workers I ever saw at the mine.

Condolences to Lisa, Bill, Bob and other family members. I have fond memories of “Uncle Al” as we called him. Not knowing at such a young age that he was really my cousin. He never corrected us.
May he rest in eternal peace.

Lisa, Bill, Bob – Some of the happiest times of my life was working with Al. He was one of the strongest and hardest working men I ever knew, and I know he loved his family very much. I’ll always have fond memories of Al, Sandy, and you three growing up.

To Lisa, Bill and Bob, your Dad and Mom are together again in heaven. I know he missed her so much, as do we. We will certainly miss Uncle Al, he would pop in to say Hi at the bank when I worked at the spot where he worked as a mechanic for many years, prior in the previous building, asking for his “favorite niece”. I am sure he called all of his nieces and great nieces and great great nieces his favorites since he loved us all. He always made me smile . We will hold our memories of him close to our hearts forever. Love to all of you from me and my family.
