Charles (Charlie) L. Vidonic, 90, of Belmont, Ohio passed away Friday, February 17, 2023 at Wheeling Hospital. He was the son of George and Mary (Dantrassy) Vidonic.  Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Shepherd) Vidonic. He was also preceded by grandson Robert A. Hatten Jr and son-in-law Robert B. O’Kelley and former wife Susan (Caldwell) Biery.   Charlie was a long-time union member and retired as the Business Agent for Laborers Local 1149,  Wheeling. He was active throughout his life in local and national politics and continued working election campaigns throughout his retirement. Charlie also served his country in the Korean War.  Charlie was raised in South Wheeling in a strong Catholic family and was always ready to help not only family and friends, but even strangers in need. He was also a lifelong member of the PAP Club and the IOLA Club and there along with several local restaurants would gather a group of friends to listen to him, as the master storyteller, spin his yarns. Charlie was active throughout his life. He played football for Wheeling Central Catholic High School and later became known throughout the region for his fast pitch baseball, wicked left-handed, underhand pitching skills. Ever the outdoor enthusiast, he grew up hunting and his favorite retirement activity was fishing, and he would load up his “fishing” car and go meet his buddies at the local fishing holes.  Surviving him are his children, Charleen Hatten, Belmont, OH; Mary Helen Klassen (Bret), Pensacola, FL; Suzanne Vidonic Gist, Wheeling, WV; Maggie Vidonic, Wheeling, WV; Ted Vidonic (Chris Hott), Inwood,  WV; Becky Zakas, Belle, WV; and Lisa Leadmon (Sylvia Orozco), Buena Park, CA; Stepson Jimmy Shepherd (Becky). He is also survived by former spouse, Penny Fortner, Charleston, WV. Additionally, Charlie is survived by 7 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren as well as several cousins. Showings for Charlie will be at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wednesday, 22 February from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm. Services will be held Thursday, 23 February at 11:00 also at
Altmeyer with Rev. Joseph Wiley officiating. Interment will be at Mt Cavalry immediately following the service.  Contributions may be made to The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, 1610 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV  26003

Bergman, Walker, Trouten, Bonar, Snyder (Roger and Howard), Fahey, Wolfe, Frieden, Porter, Rector, Payters, Foster.  I apologize for leaving out a few. I’m just glad to have been lucky enough to play with or against many of those men when fast pitch softball pitchers were known locally as well as starting NFL quarterbacks to football fans. Charlie wasn’t the the TOM BRADY of the group, but he was a competitor and on the list of my memories. My thoughts and sympathy go out to all of Mr. Vidonic’s family and many friends.
