Dr. Ignacio Hoelzl Luna passed away in Wheeling, WV, on Friday, Oct. 28. He was born in Tago, Surigao, Philippines, the eldest child of Concepcion Alcazar Hoelzl and Ignacio Albay Luna. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Maria Immaculada, and brother TonyValFrank. He leaves his wife Nancy and son Michael, brother Fredrick (Nina), brother-in-law John (Charlene), nephews and nieces Frederich, Eve Angelique, Jo-An, Jason, Beth Ann; great-nieces and -nephews Evanne, Sophia, Mimi, Amelia, Kalee, Christopher, Amos, Nina, Caroline, Ethan, Will, Tyler, and several other relatives in this country and the Philippines.
He is a 1964 alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas School of Medicine, Manila, Philippines, was recruited by South Chicago Community Hospital, then transferred to St Elizabeth Hospital, Chicago, then to St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio, for surgical internship and residencies. His urology residency was at Charleston Memorial Hospital in Charleston, WV. Reynolds Memorial Hospital staff in Glen Dale were pleased at his choice of this area for urology practice, which lasted forty-two years. The practice expanded to Martins Ferry, OH, and hospitals in Wheeling. He also served in various terms as officer of the medical staffs.
Dr. Luna loved being here, as it reminded him of the mountains and rivers of his homeland, and people in the community were welcoming and friendly. With many other Filipino families here, he enjoyed their shared culture and friendship. He was a parishioner of St Jude, a member of the Rotary Club of Moundsville, Marshall and Ohio County Medical Societies.
Interests and service were expanded to many organizations: American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, WV and National Urological Societies, Association of Philippine Practicing Physicians in America, Bisaya Medical Association, Tri-State Fil-Am Association of the Ohio Valley.
Two of his favorite pastimes were flying and martial arts. He obtained his private pilot license in 1972. He became a practitioner of Poekoelan Chuan Fa Pendjak Silat system, rising to the dragon level.
Visitation will be from 1-3pm and 4:30-7pm on Friday, November 4, at Altmeyer Funeral Home Elm Grove, 154 Kruger St.. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, November 5, 10 am, at St. Michael Church, 1201 National Rd. Interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, or a charity of your choice.

Dear Nancy and family, so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Luna was a very special man. He always had a smile, a cute joke, and very warm greetings every day we saw him at work. He played a very important role with the staff at the hospitals. You both supported East Ohio in many ways. Always there with a smile and active participation.
