Visitation

Edward Singer Witzberger, “Eddie”, 88, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018, in Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling.

Eddie was born August 4, 1929, in Wheeling, a son of the late Edward Eugene and Isabelle (Singer) Witzberger. He retired from A.E. Pelley Plumbing; was a graduate of Wheeling Central High School; a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Mount Olivet; and a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was also a member of Mount Olivet Lion’s Club Variety Show; and a former member of the Elm Grove Eagles and Elm Grove Civics.

Eddie loved planes and flying, and though he didn’t become a pilot, he was thrilled when he did his solo flight. When you talked to Eddie, something you said would always inspire a song from him, right then and there. Before cell phones, he enjoyed volunteering as a Ham Radio operator for the Elby’s 20K, to ensure emergency help could be notified quickly. He also volunteered to drive veterans to the VA Hospitals in Pittsburgh.

In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Agnes (Donahie) Witzberger; and three sisters, Evelyn West, Marguerite Seabright and Mary Belle Pelley. He is survived by his wife, Vera (Bott) Gantzer Witzberger; two sons, Mark (Barb) Witzberger of Wheeling, and Kirk (Gloria) Witzberger of Solon, Iowa; a daughter, Jan (Vince) Yinger of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Albetty Zinn of Wheeling; step-children, Janet (Bruce) Wallin of Malvern, Pa., Rick (Barbara) Gantzer of Morgantown, W.Va,, Jerry (Karen) Gantzer of Ramona, Calif., Andy (Mary) Gantzer of Westerville, Ohio, Audrey (Bill) Robinson of Wheeling, Amy Bowman of Lexington, N.C., Jim (Marcia) Gantzer of Wheeling, and Rebecca Mckennen of Wheeling; six grandchildren, Melissa (John) Krajcovic, Jason Witzberger, Shea Witzberger, Kai Witzberger, Sadie Yinger and Karlie Yinger; 20 step-grandchildren, Megan Wallin, Stephanie Gantzer, Steven Gantzer, Matthew Gantzer, Zachary Gantzer, Rachel Gantzer, Kyle (Kayla) Gantzer, Lauren Gantzer, Graham Gantzer, Caitlyn (Bob) Waruszewski, Anna Gantzer, A.J. Gantzer, Nicole Robinson, Brandon Robinson, Jacob Robinson, Kayla Bowman, Ryan Bowman, Tyler Gantzer, Cody Mckennen and Kylie Mckennen; 2 great-grandsons, Jack and Aaron Krajcovic; and a step-great-granddaughter, Lucy Waruszewski.

Friends will be received from 12-3 & 5-7 pm, Sunday, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 2:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Monday, January 29, 2018, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, with the Rev. Douglas Ondeck as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
