Ethel Jane Taylor McCann, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Orange City, Florida, on Friday, December 8, 2023.  Ethel was born in Coburn, WV and graduated from Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she was voted Homecoming Queen.  She moved to Washington, DC area where she was Chief Congressional Caseworker for the Secretary of the Army.  She retired on Dec. 31, 1999, after more than 30 years. 

After retirement, she moved to Florida.  She was an avid reader and was treasurer of the Orange City Library for several years.  She also loved going to the YMCA for water aerobics and to the gym for weight training.

Over the years Ethel was a big supporter of the Steeler’s in good years and bad.  She also loved to watch WVU football.  Her hobbies included tennis and reading.

Ethel was preceded in death by her father, George Leslie Taylor; her mother Virginia Beaman Taylor Atkinson; one brother, Charles Kenneth Taylor and one nephew, Howard William Taylor.  

She is survived by her brother, William “Bill” Taylor; her niece, Kelley Taylor (David) Letter; Her great-nephew, David (Mandy) Letter, II and their son, Bryson; her great-nephew Andrew Letter (Katherine and Logan); her great-niece, Elizabeth Letter (Griffin) Fuller and their children, Derek, Jayden and Lydia. Ethel is also survived by her nieces, Judie (Robby) Smith, Kim (Bill) Floyd, Beth (Tom) Morton, Mary (Jay) Grace, Gine (Boyd) McCune and each of their children and grandchildren, and her nephew, Chuck Taylor. 

Ethel was extremely active in the lives of her immediate and extended family. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them or her friends. 

We are all better for having Ethel in our lives. She will be sorely missed. 

Family and friends will be received Saturday, December 16, 2023, from 9 am until time of service at 12 pm, at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 1400 Eoff St., Wheeling. Interment will be held at Stone Church Cemetery, where she will be buried beside her mother. 

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in ℅ www.tmcfunding.com or to a charity of your choice.
