Eugene Richard French, 74, of Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville peacefully passed away at home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Eugene was born January 9, 1948 in Glen Dale, WV to the late Vannie Richard and Grace (Streets) French.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years,  Hilda (Stewart) French; 2 sons, Timothy French of Moundsville and Bryan French of Benwood Hill; one daughter,  Sally Arnold of Fork Ridge; 5 grandchildren,  Bethany French of Orange Park, FL, Rachel (Donnie) Standiford of Fork Ridge, JJ (Nikki) Arnold of Fork Ridge, Amelia (Frank) Warren of Martin’s Ferry, OH and Alex (Summer) French of Beach Bottom; 7 great-grandchildren,  Ralen Arnold, Micah Vidal, Jesse Doyle, Daniel Warren, Kinsley Arnold, Frankie Warren and Abigail Warren. He loved his family and thought the world of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a proud Navy Veteran.  He was stationed in Mayport, FL.   During his active duty, he was assigned to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft carrier and during his tour on ship he was in Italy, Spain, Greece, France and Germany. He joined the Navy reserve were he was assigned to Rhode Island and Virginia. He enjoyed his career in the Navy and enjoyed the fellowship with the friends he made every year at the Navy dinners. He retired from PPG after 37 years where he met a lot of people and made many friends.
Eugene always had a hobby and did a lot of things in his life. Some of his interests included raising birds, racing homing pigeons, raising beagle dogs and coon dogs, hunting, fishing, trapping, car collecting, car shows, dirt track races, auctions, building computers, gardening, planting flowers and trees, CB and HAM radios, gun and coin collecting. He also enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home calling bingo, playing a hillbilly Santa several years for a Christmas skit and playing the part of Santa Claus and passing out gifts for the residents Christmas party. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin with all of his family.  He also owned and operated many businesses. He enjoyed helping others. He made many wonderful memories with his family and friends. He was loved and will be missed by many.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 13th from 2pm to 8pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Ave Moundsville, WV.  Funeral services will be Monday at 11am with Reverend Don Rush officiating.  The internment will be at Riverview Cemetery.
