George Howard Yates, 80, of Mt. Olivet, Wheeling, died Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at home.
He was born August 24, 1940, in Glen Dale, WV to the late Helen (Bernas) and Robert W. Yates. George grew up in Benwood and raised his family in McMechen.
He worked for the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel for 34 ½ years. After retirement he owned and ran the Country Gold Club in Martins Ferry, OH and was the current owner of the Croatian Club in Benwood. He was a forever working man and would always say, “I’ll rest when I’m dead”. Our family is sure he is working in heaven.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandson Luke Yates; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and Sue Mager; step-brothers, Sam and Robert Yates and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Elaine Mager.
George is survived by his loving wife, of 58 years, Rose E. (Mager) Yates; two children, George and his wife Jennifer Yates of McMechen and Karen and her husband Steve Westlund of Loris, SC; grandchildren, Shannon Yates, Zack and his wife Lindsey Yates, Walker Westlund and Delaney Westlund; one brother, Walter and his wife Rose Yates of Benwood; two sisters, Roberta Redd and her fiancé Phil Persinger of FL and Mary Truex of CA; nephew Bob and his wife Shermaine Mager of Glen Dale; the Mager nephews and niece and Yates nephews and nieces. His girls, Angie Schubert and Lois McNinch and his dog, Ben.
The family would like to thank Brenda and Dr. Kureishy and his staff and the staff of Valley Hospice.
Family and friends will be received Sunday, May 2, 2021 from 1-4 & 6-8 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall St. Cremation to follow services.

I remember George from the Country Gold days. Very nice man who always treated me well and liked a good time. My sympathies to Rose and family!

Rose and the family of George: I have many great memories of George. He was one of a kind for sure! I will miss him but will always cherish the great times we had( especially doing the twist with him). Heaven gained one special angel. RIP
