Howard Melvin “Mel” Dorsey, 89, of Wheeling, formerly of Glen Dale, W.Va. and St. Clairsville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017, in Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.
Mel was born May 8, 1928, in McMechen, W.Va., a son of the late Howard M. Dorsey, Sr. and Mary Ann (Rogerson) Dorsey. He was the retired owner of the former Mel’s Auto Sales, Moundsville, W.Va.; the former Factory Outlet Store, Moundsville; Airport Limousine, Wheeling, since 1986; and the former Dorsey Buick, New Martinsville, W.Va. He was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wheeling, and a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Moundsville, having served on the council at both churches. He was a member and volunteer for Faith in Action Caregivers since 1999; where he formerly served as a board member, executive board member, and on the Board of Directors. He was also the 2011 recipient of the Faith in Action Caregivers National Volunteer of the Year.
In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores (Baker) Dorsey McIntyre; his second wife, Margaret (Heitz) Pultz Dorsey; and his daughter, Brenda Kay Stein.
Mel is survived by his very special companion, Janet Uttermohlen of Wheeling; three sons, William H. Dorsey (Shirley Whitlatch) of Moundsville, Thomas (Petra) Dorsey of Moundsville, W.Va., and Kevin Dorsey of Webb Heights, Shadyside, Ohio; two step-sons, Jay (Barbara) Pultz of New Jersey, and Leslie (Michelle) Pultz of Boggs Run, Benwood, W.Va.; a brother, Roger (Donna) Dorsey of Glen Dale Heights, Glen Dale, W.Va.; a nephew, John (Liz) Dorsey of McMechen, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2-4 6-8 pm Tuesday, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling. Friends will then be received from 10 am until time of funeral services at 11 am, Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger Street, Wheeling, with the Rev. R. Paul Schafer officiating. Entombment will follow in Halcyon Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum, Sherrard, W.Va.
