Janice Anne (Prager) Caldwell, 85, of Sherrard, WV died Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the Shadyside Care Center in Shadyside, Ohio. She was born on January 18, 1932 in Wheeling, the eldest daughter of the late James H. Prager III and Anne Kulaga Prager. She was preceded in death by a son, Alexander Stefan Caldwell, in 1979, and by her husband of 47 years, Roland C. Caldwell, in 2001.
Janice attended St. Michael’s Grade School and St. Joseph’s Academy, graduating in 1950. She also attended West Liberty State College and West Virginia Northern Community College. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and had her family history published in the Ohio County Public Library.
She was an accomplished writer, with her first publication being a Christmas story in 1942 for the Wheeling Steel Corporation. She was later published over 30 times for fiction and non-fiction in major magazines. Janice was also an award-winning artist, who taught oil painting classes for WVNCC and the WVU Extension office in Moundsville for 18 years. She was a life-long lover of horses who enjoyed country living, her farm in Sherrard, and attending county fairs, horse shows and cruises to the West Indies. She was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church; a Life Member of the National Rifle Association; an NRA Golden Eagle; an avid shooter; a Life Member of the Moundsville Rifle and Pistol Club; and a charter member of the “87 Club” for preservation of the Cockayne historical home in Glen Dale.
Surviving are one sister, Patricia Tolbert of St. Clairsville, OH; three sons, Richard J. Caldwell (Susan) of Hurricane, WV; Charles W. Caldwell (Carol) of Moundsville, WV; and Christian A. Caldwell (Melissa) also of Moundsville; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove Chapel, Wheeling, WV, is handling the arrangements. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held, with interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling on Thursday, September 7th.
