Jerome “Jerry” G. DiCresce, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, peacefully passed away on January 31, 2024, in Wheeling, WV, at the age of 90. Born on November 18, 1933, in Benwood, WV, Jerry lived a life filled with dedication, love, and a strong sense of family and community.

Jerry dedicated 40 years of his life as a meat cutter at Kroger. His commitment to his work was evident in the way he served his customers and colleagues alike. Jerry was known for his humor, friendly demeanor, exceptional skills and unwavering work ethic.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jerry was an active member of various organizations, showcasing his passion for community service. He held an officer position at Belmont-Jefferson Beagle Club, he was a founding member of Garibaldi Lodge, and a supporter of the NRA. His dedication to Trinity Episcopal Church was witnessed through his many years of service on the vestry. Additionally, he was a proud member of American Legion Post 5 in McMechen, WV.

Jerry valued education, having graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1951. Shortly after, he bravely served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955. Jerry’s time in the Navy exemplified his unwavering commitment to protecting his country and the values he held dear.

Jerry’s loving spirit extended to his family, whom he cherished deeply. He was married to his adoring wife, Barbara “Claudette” DiCresce, for a remarkable 66 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, support, and countless cherished memories. Jerry was a devoted father to his son, David “Mike” DiCresce of McMechen, WV, and his daughters, Marcia (Thomas) Sorge of Summerville, SC, and Lori (William) Coen of Glen Dale, WV. His presence will be forever cherished by his brother, Angelo DeCrease of Sarasota, FL, his granddaughter, Lauren DiCresce, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as great-great-nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Filomena DiCresce, as well as his siblings: Anthony, Domonick, Aukey, Frank, Daniel, Antonia, John, and Phillip. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Todd Hayes, and his brother-in-law, William Criswell.

Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects during the visitation hours on Friday, February 2, 2024, from 3-7 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall Street, McMechen, WV. There will be an additional visitation on Saturday, February 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1 Oak Avenue, Moundsville, WV, officiated by Reverend Richard Skaggs. Jerry will be laid to rest at Halcyon Hills Memorial Gardens.

Jerry’s legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his community and family will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the lasting impact he had on the lives of others.

Lori, I am SO sorry to hear the news (today) of your Fathers passing! My heart just sank. To this wonderful man who created powerhouse women in your family (and brother) and husband. My sympathy. I was a co-worker in the meat dept. at the Benwood Store. After retirement, I was friends with several members of the Beagle Club, so I was getting up dates on Jerry. He was a great friend. Bill Ferrell
