Service will be followed by Jim’s Last Service Call by the McMechen Fire Department and Chief John Davis

James “Jim” Ray Vance, of McMechen, WV was a beloved husband, father, friend and Fire Fighter left this world suddenly on August 12, 2023, at the age of 69. Born to the late Emery and Erma (Guthrie) Vance on May 30, 1954, in Wheeling, WV, Jim lived a life full of laughter, love, and a few strikes at several bowling alleys.

Jim was a 1973 Graduate of John Marshall High School and a dedicated Shipping Agent with Swisher International, ensuring packages reached their destinations with utmost precision.

When he wasn’t perfecting his bowling skills around the Ohio Valley, Jim could be found cheering on his beloved Nailers hockey team or hanging around the McMechen Fire Station. Jim was an extremely dedicated member of the McMechen Fire Department for over 33 years where he proudly held the office of Safety Officer. As a firefighter, he fearlessly protected his community that he dearly loved, putting his life on the line whenever duty called. Jim’s commitment to service did not go unnoticed, and he will forever be remembered as a hero among us.

Jim shared over 44 years of love and companionship with his cherished wife, Dona Vance. They stood by each other through thick and thin, creating a bond that only grew stronger with time.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jim’s memory lives on through his sons, Chris Vance and Brian (Chandel Sigley) Vance, who inherited his love for laughter, dedication to community and his unwavering spirit. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly through the lives he touched.

Friends and family are invited to pay their final respects during the visitation at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 214 Marshall Street, McMechen, WV on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm, as well as on Thursday from 10:00 until the time of service at 11:00 am.

A special Fallen FireFighter Service will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 6:00 pm to honor Jim’s dedicated service and bravery. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 11:00 am at the funeral home, presided over by Fire Chaplain, Rev. Mitch Johnston. Following the service, there will be a Final Call to celebrate Jim’s remarkable service to the community and Fire Department of McMechen.

Jim will be laid to rest in Gratiot, Ohio, immediately after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the McMechen Volunteer Fire Department, a cause near to Jim’s heart by clicking the link posted on the side.

Although Jim’s passing leaves us with heavy hearts, we are comforted by the memories we shared and the joy he brought into our lives.

Jim and I went to JM together. You’d always see him somewhere around in the hallways with a smile and something to talk about.
While I was Chief of Police in McMechen. Jim was always one of the first fire fighters on scene of almost every incident.
I know his family will miss him and I want to send them my condolences. But if it’s any comfort. God got himself a great Firefighter and great person. And you can bet Jim will be looking down and keeping a watchful eye on you.

My heart felt sympathy and prayers go out to Dona, Brian and Chris. When I volunteered as an EMT-B with McMechen Volunteer Fire Department Jimmy was the squad driver a lot of the time. He was a wonderful man to work at the bingo hall. Please know when his “Final Call” is heard that there won’t be a dry eye. May you rest in peace Jimmy!

I grew up with Jimmy. we were great friends then. He would always stop by when he knew my husband was taken to the hospital by the Esquad. I saw him at Walmart shopping several times, always with a smile and a hug.. So sorry for your loss. Hugs and prayers. I can’t come to the funeral home, I don’t drive, but my thoughts will be with you.
