Karen Mae Ries, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024, at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was born on December 16, 1935, in Wheeling as the daughter of the late Charles S. and Mildred R. Lowe.

She graduated from Wheeling High School in 1953 and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Karen found solace and strength in her faith as a lifelong, devoted member of the First English Lutheran Church. Karen’s hobbies included reading, sewing, crocheting, and baking.  She was always humming a tune while doing her daily activities.

Her most treasured role was that of a devoted wife to her husband, Glenn Robert Ries. Bob preceded her in death in 2007.

Preceding her in death also was her sister Grace A. Rice in 1999 and her step-son Thomas M. Ries in 2021.

Karen will be deeply missed by her children, son David E. Ries of Boone, North Carolina, and daughters Evelyn M. Ries of Waynesville, North Carolina, and Cheryl A. Harvey of Jacksonville, North Carolina. She also leaves behind her beloved sisters, Sarah L.(Daniel) Kleeh of Wheeling, West Virginia, and Melissa J (Joe) Boyd of St. Augustine, Florida; as well as her brothers, Charles W. (Carol) Lowe of Moundsville, West Virginia, and Lance S. Lowe of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Karen is survived by six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as her four footed niece, Josie.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours on Saturday, January 20th, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, located at 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV, 26003. A service honoring Karen’s life will take place at the funeral home following the visitation at 12:00 p.m

Following the service, a procession will escort Karen to her final resting place at Greenwood Cemetery on National Road, where a committal service will be held.
