Marcella Carmel (Baker) McGinnis, 90, of Wheeling, was peacefully born to eternal life on Friday, February 2, 2018.
She was born June 27, 1927 in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Norbert L. and Angela (Stenger) Baker.
In addition to her parents, Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wendle McGinnis in 2016; a brother, Norbert L. “Bud” Baker; and her sisters, Mary Lou Raab, Angela Gaynor and Anna Marie McGlumphy.
She was Catholic by faith and a graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy in Wheeling; a former employee of the C P Telephone Co.; a volunteer at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and a homemaker.
Her special secret was her sincere enjoyment of life. Her family, her faith, travels, meeting people, the outdoors, flowers, dancing, crosswords, bingo, music and life’s challenges- were all met with a positive attitude. Whether you knew her as Marcella, Mom, Mimi or LaLa- you could count on her (even when times were difficult) for a hug, a smile and unconditional love, support and acceptance. She always felt that her family was her special blessing, but in fact, she was the one who was a blessing to all of us.
Marcella is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Joseph) Gompers; her granddaughter, Kelly (Christopher) Lohri of Wheeling; her grandson, Michael (Kelly) Gompers of Philadelphia, PA; four great grandchildren, Michael and Jackson Gompers, Addison and Joshua Lohri; her brother, Joe (Veneida) Baker; brother in law, Jim McGinnis; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 6-8pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling, where rosary devotions will be recited at 7:30pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 10:00am at Good Shepherd Nursing Home Chapel, 158 Edgington Lane, Wheeling, with Rev. John Beckley, S.M., as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
A special thanks to Dr. Mercer and Valley Hospice for their compassionate care of her and her family and to the Clara Welty staff and neighbors for their support, love and friendship during the last few years. In Marcella’s words, “I’m so lucky to have such nice people around me.”

Mrs. McGinnis was one of the loveliest women I have ever known. I consider her to be a role model of grace, and I am so thankful that our paths met when they did. I was sad when I learned that she passed away. But, it is true, she will be with God, and with her husband, and their love will be felt all the way back down here.

Kathy and family…so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Mom was such a special lady. We missed seeing her at OLP. Several years ago we learned that your Mom and Bob were second cousins! GOD’s peace be with you.
