Mary Margaret Hawk, 94, of Benwood, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015, in Peterson Rehab Center.
She was born March 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Adrian and Irene (Comer) Norton. Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Rosary Alter Society of St. James Parish, and Women’s Life, and volunteered in Wheeling Hospital for 25 years. She was a skilled knitter and loved taking care of her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, of 46 years, Walter J. Hawk (1984); one daughter; Susan Elder; one brother, Jack Norton; one sister, Elizabeth Gossett; one grandson, Kenny Martin; and one great-great-grandson, Del Shon Porterfield.
Mary is survived by her five children, Rosemarie Martin of Niles, Ohio, Tom (Bernice) Hawk, of Martins Ferry, Ohio, James Hawk, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Carol (Doug) Shoaff, of Mt. Olivet, W. Va., and Swootzy (Charlotte) Hawk, of Moundsville, W. Va.; two siblings, Irene “Betty” Robertson, of Geneva, Ohio and Adrian (Marge) Norton, of Pt. Pleasant, Pa.; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall St., McMechen. Mass of Christian burial will be held, Wednesday, September 16 at 11 am at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Bekeh as celebrant. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

A beautiful woman inside and out who is already missed. As the priest said in her memorial mass, the best way to honor such a loving and faithful woman is to be like her. So true! She set the bar for how to live and love. Love you grandma!
