Michael J. Ryan, 50, of Clearwater, Fla., died on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Fla., after a brief illness.

He was born on June 24, 1968, in Wheeling, the youngest son of Virginia R. Gosztyla Ryan and the late Charles C. Ryan. He was a 1986 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and a 1990 graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting.

He was an accountant for 22 years with William R. DeMers & Company of Hudson, Fla., serving more than 200 clients, and was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinellas Park, Fla.

Michael, or “Tweety’’ as he was known to many of his friends, left West Virginia several years ago but retained his love of following the WVU Mountaineers, and was also a devout fan of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and the NFL’s Raiders. He loved action movies, playing golf with his best friend, Joe Uraco, road running, hanging out with friends, and was always regarded as a snappy dresser.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by brothers David C. Ryan and his wife Susan, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Richard P. Ryan and his wife, Lori, of South Charleston, W.Va.; Terrence R. Ryan and his wife, Cindy, of Morgantown, W.Va.; and sisters Janet L. Ryan Morse of Alpine, Calif.; Katherine A. McNeil and her husband, Mickey, of Wheeling; and Susan M. Ryan, of Niles, Mich.

He was also known as “Uncle Mikey,’’ to many in his Florida family, as well as his loving nieces and nephews. Nieces include Anna Morse of Spring Valley, Calif.; Katy McNeil (Brian Davis) of Chicago, Ill.; and Grace and Maddie Lister of Niles, Mich., with Grace being his Goddaughter. Nephews include Dan Ryan of South Charleston, W.Va.; Patrick Ryan of Morgantown; Mark Helmantoler (Claudia Varas) of Santiago, Chile and the late Eric Helmantoler of Lemon Grove, Calif.; Ryan Morse of Spring Valley, Calif.; Ryan McNeil (Brenna Fasko) of Akron, Ohio; and Michael McNeil of Wheeling. Also surviving are grandniece Roslyn McNeil of Akron, Ohio, and grandnephew Marley Helmantoler of Allied Gardens, Calif.

Friends will be received on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove. Liturgy of the word will be celebrated on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11 am at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheeling with Msgr. Joseph Peterson as celebrant . A luncheon will be held immediately following mass at the St. Michael’s Angelus Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wheeling Central Catholic High School through www.TMCFunding.com

When my son called DeMers to ask Mike to handle his taxes this year, we were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mike’s passing. Mike handled my mother’s taxes for many years, and after she needed help taking care of things, my husband and I developed a wonderful working relationship with Mike. He was a wonderful young man adding great value to the world, and my family and I are so sorry that his life was cut short. I am grieving at his loss and remembering how talented and personable he was. Your loved one made a fine impression even on those, like me, who knew him only professionally.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mike and his family. I wasn’t related to him by blood, but he always was, and always will be, my Uncle Mike. I grew up with him as a part of my family in Florida. Whether it was going to the beach when I was so little the only memories I have now are photos, watching a Steeler’s game or hearing my dad tell stories of how they used to stay up late playing the latest Nintendo game together. He meant so much to me and my family. My uncle Mike was a great man — anyone who knows him would agree. He’ll be greatly missed, but we will never forget him. I love you uncle Mike.
