THOMAS, Raymond Stephen “Steve”, 64, of Moundsville, W.Va., went peacefully home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, after a relatively short battle with liver cancer.
Steve was an avid hunter and lover of wildlife. He was dedicated to his family and all their pursuits. This was never more true than with baseball. He was married for 44 years to his grade school sweetheart. Steve was an intelligent soul, always learning – earning him the nickname of “Sponge” by his colleagues at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel where he worked for over 40 years. He chose to work after retirement at Kroger in Moundsville.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jerrie (Breiding) Thomas in 2001.
Steve is survived by his wife, Monti (Hinegardner) Thomas; one son, Stephen (Erin) Thomas; four grandchildren, Hannah, Hayden, Jackson, and Jude Thomas; and his puppy Oaklee all of Moundsville; his father, Ray Thomas Jr. of Benwood, W.Va.; one brother, Terrence (Brenda) Thomas of Sherrard, W.Va.; one niece, Whitney (Nick) Healy of Moundsville; one nephew, Kenny (Samantha) Thomas of Baltimore, Md.; one uncle, Thomas (Mary) Breiding of Wheeling, W.Va.; and one great nephew Hudson of Moundsville.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017, at 5 pm at the Cedar Avenue Church of Christ, where Steve was a member. Friends and family are all invited to a memorial gathering at the Glen Dale Fire Hall from 6-8 pm.
As Steve would have wished, memorial donations can be made to the Wheeling Wildthings Baseball c/o Mike Bittinger at Elm Grove Athletics, the John Marshall Boys Soccer Team, or to the Cedar Avenue Church of Christ through www.tmcfunding.com

My old friend Steve (and family), so sad to hear of your father’s passing. I have many great memories of your Dad from the Benwood baseball glory days…he was always there for us and I’m glad to have known him and to have looked up to him. A great guy. I wish you and your mother Monti the best…you’ll always be in my thoughts and prayers.
Matt
Steve and I went all 12 years of school together. My deepest sympathy and love to Montifore and family. R.I.P. Steve.
Monti, my sympathy to you and your family. Will remember Steve in my prayers. I just found out about Steve.
I had the pleasure to work with Steve at the Coke Plant. I can’t remember what year he came to daylight, but when he did, we got paired together most days. No matter what job we were given, he made it fun and entertaining. I got to hear so many great stories of Monti, Stevie and the grandkids.
You will be missed, my friend!
Steve was one of the best guys to work with! He could sure make you laugh! I ‘am so sorry for your loss. He was a great guy!
