Robert H. (Bob) Carpenter, 87, of Moundsville, WV, formerly of Holloway, OH, died Monday, June 12 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling after a fall in his home. He was surrounded by his loving family who celebrated his life with stories and played his favorite music during his final hours.

He was born December 29, 1929 in Moundsville, the son of the late Roy and Mary Carpenter, and stepson of the late Tom McGary. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his discharge in 1954, he began working as a carman with the Chessie System where he remained employed until his retirement in 1991. He was also the owner/operator of Bob’s Place and Mierniks Store in Holloway. Mr. Carpenter was a former Mayor of Holloway, a member of the American Legion in Flushing, and the Holloway United Methodist Church.

Bob was a hard-working, skilled, kind, gentle man who provided quiet leadership when it was needed, and when it was requested. He cared deeply about every member of his family and expressed that love with laughter and patience. With a depth of knowledge that covered everything from current events and politics to local sports and his beloved Cincinnati Bengals. Bob could charm the stubborn, out-argue the misinformed, and make friends with everyone he encountered. His smile and handshake were well-known from the grounds of Old Timers’ celebrations in Holloway and the shores of Piedmont Lake, to his church congregation and his frequent backyard celebrations where adults enjoyed his conversation and children enjoyed his wisdom and kindness.

He is survived by his loving wife, of 63 years, Helen (Oliver) Carpenter; four daughters, Rachel Carpenter (Bob) Singell of Galena, OH, Cindy Carpenter (Gerrill) Griffith of Washington, PA, Joyce Carpenter (Shad) Fromhart of Moundsville, and Mary Kay Carpenter (Kevin) Roseberry of Shadyside, OH; seven grandsons, Eric Gongola of Winterhaven, FL, Travis Norris of San Diego, CA, Rob (Leah) Gongola of Chardon, OH, Joshua Fromhart of Wheeling, WV, Jacob (Stacy Seiler) Fromhart of Pittsburgh, PA, Blake (Becky Martin) Roseberry of Westerville, and Conor Griffith of Morgantown, WV; six granddaughters, Sheri Carpenter of Belmont, OH, Heather (Evan) Wiedenhamer of Galena, OH, Brianne (Jay) Roseberry of Bellaire, OH, Katie (Greg) McNemar of Coshocton, OH, Bailey Roseberry and Bella Roseberry of Shadyside,16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou (Bowman) Carpenter; two brothers, Rex and Don Carpenter; and one son, Robert D. Carpenter.

Family and friends will be received Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Ave., Moundsville, where services will be held, Friday, June 16 at 11 am. The passing of a dear loved one, is a difficult experience for family members. Sorry for your loss. It is through the privilege of prayer, that the family can experience God’s love and comfort in the most intimate way. May the family find comfort through prayer to Jehovah, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all of our trials”. 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4.
