William J. Schafer, 89, of Port Huron Township, Michigan, formerly of Wheeling, West Virginia, died Thursday, May 25, 2017.
He was born October 19, 1927 in Wheeling to the late Joseph and Gertrude Schafer. He married Pearl Leetta Montgomery Slider on June 30, 1967 in Pontiac, Michigan. She died October 20, 2016 after 49 years of marriage.
William served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was employed as a postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Charles Hammond Post 8 in Port Huron.
He is survived by two daughters, Lorrie (Matt) Tanton and Hazel (Jerry) Reinhardt; six grandchildren, Connie (Andy) Orosz, Letty (Bill) Seabright, Jerry Reinhardt, Lori (Greg) Preston, Michelle (John) Raymond and Mary (James) Hill; great grandchildren, Kristin Seabright, Amber Bruce, Devin Parsons, Matthew Orosz, David Orosz, John Orosz, Haleigh Preston, Coen Preston, Katelynn Preston, Lincoln Preston, John Raymond, Caroline Raymond, Brittley Hill, Brielle Hill and JT Hill; great great grandchildren, Cadence, Quentin and Mirabella; his brother, Joseph (Sarah Jean) Schafer; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved granddog, Flash.
He was preceded in death by a son, Elwood Slider; a daughter, Loretta Ullum; and a sister, Mary Margaret Schafer.
Friends will be received from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 pm, Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Wheeling Chapel, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bekeh Utietiang.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the Moundsville Honor Guard
Memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Water Area Humane Society, 6266 Lapeer Road, Clyde, Michigan 48049.
